South Gower (14) v (27) Gowerton

It was important to say that not every game is going to be a 40-50 point win. There will be a time when they will have to win “ugly”. To roll up their sleeves and grind it out. To suck it up. And this was that time. A dour, attritional game where Gowerton got their noses in front early on and managed to hold on to it despite some fierce and stubborn resistance from the home team.

The game was not without its’ highlights. A spectacular break from Zac G in the first half with some highly effective hand offs, a fine move through the backs involving Rhys J, Charlie W and a superb line from Alex J to set up Joe D to go over from short range and some great runs from a resurgent Cameron J in the loose.

But the opportunities for the wide men – Kieran H and Kobe B – both enjoying fruitful seasons so far, was limited. No, this was a game won in the trenches. Joe D, Ethan H, Owen M all having big, physical matches and Zac J having his game of the season. The introduction of Olly M and Josh P maintained the pressure on South Gower.

The boys started fast, a feature of the season so far. There was good pressure across the line and Jac S and Josh B were constantly probing for attacking opportunities. But it was a spectacular break from Zac G that led to the opener. He ran 30 yards, handing off several defenders before dropping the ball on the line. From the resulting scrum, however, he went over from close range. Joe D’s deserved try added to the lead before a mysterious penalty try was awarded to South Gower to make it 7-12 at the break.

With the wind against them in the second half, you may have expected a more defensive effort from the boys but instead they went on the offensive. A mix of some barrelling runs from Cameron J and Zac G combined with some great rucking and mauling kept the pressure on South Gower and Zac G extended the lead and Cameron J added another following a great drive off a maul.

A surprise break from South Gower saw them go over to reduce the deficit before a sublime move involving Rhys J and Josh B led to “super sub” Adam W going over to make the final score 14-27.

A big thank you to both Adam W and Elliot H who both volunteered to make up the numbers in a South Gower shirt at various stages. This only ensures more game time for everyone.

The momentum continues to build and the enthusiastic support on the touchline should also be acknowledged. There is a real “team” atmosphere and not just on the pitch. The boys are playing some great rugby and the winning habit is addictive. Lets’ enjoy these moments and look forward to even more.
