U14's v Tonmawr - Solid Performance in the sun

On a beautiful spring Sunday morning we welcomed Tonmawr to the Athletic ground, with some late withdrawls we only had a few subs and our back line had to be reshuffled to accommodate the changes.  Tonmawr had some big boys in the pack and it was clear that this was going to be a stern test for us. The opening exchanges were fairly even with neither team managing to hold onto possession for too long.  It took a great run from make shift winger Tomos Davies to kick start our scoring with a fine run from deep inside our half.  From the resulting ruck, scrum half Brandon Jones picked up and barged over for a try near the posts.  Outside half Louis Davies converted to make it 7-0 after 17 minutes play.  It became a very tight game with defences dominating for both sides.  Tonmawr forwards looking dangerous, especially their back row.  On the stroke of half time, a fine move saw full back Ieuan Sleeman outpace the Tonmawr defence to score.  The conversion was missed and the half ended 12-0 to Gowerton.

We started the second half as we finished the first with a break up the line by centre Troy Davies who then passed to winger Tomos Davies who dived over in the corner for a good team try.  The conversion was also missed, 17-0 after 2 minutes play.  5 minutes later we managed to get the ball through some hands and it got to Matthew Davies in the centre who had space in front and only the fullback to beat, and with his signature side step, left the fullback flat footed and cantered over for a try under the posts.  Conversion by Loiuis Davies was successful, 24-0.  Tonmawr never gave up trying and this was repaid with a well worked try by their scrumhalf after 18 minutes play.  The conversion was good and we led 24-7.  Both teams continued to play open flowing rugby and this resulted in our final try of the game when scrum half Brandon Jones chipped the ball over the defensive line from a ruck and a fortunate bounce saw it land in winger Theo Evans hands and he broke through a couple of tired tackles to score and Louis Davies converted to make it 31-7 as the whistle went for full time.  An entertaining game played in good conditions by two teams looking to play.  Gowerton winning comfortably despite having players missing and playing out of position.
