  • Match Reports from Junior Section Games

Gower Festival of Rugby at Penclawdd (Sunday 27/04/08) - Gowerton under 8's attended their first tournament on a grey, damp Sunday morning with 5 games to play against local opposition. Fortunately, the weather improved during the day and an enjoyable day was had by all. First up for Gowerton were South Gower and Gowerton got off to a disappointing start losing 3-2 after another tight game. After a break, local rivals Penclawdd were our next opposition and Gowerton opened their account with a thrilling 6-5 win in an open game. No rest this time as Gowerton stayed on the pitch for their next game against Falls Bay and fought out a tight draw. An extended break followed, before our next match against Swansea Uplands and after falling behind Gowerton showed great spirit to fight back to draw the match. Our final opposition were an unbeaten Mumbles team. The Gowerton boys played out of their skins to win the match 4-2 after some outstanding rugby. This win was all the more deserved as we had played Mumbles 4 times this year and lost 3 of the games. Our final record was 2 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss.

Mumbles were crowned winners of the tournament with a record of 3 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss - their only loss being to Gowerton. Well done to all the boys from Gowerton who performed admirably throughout the day - 1 more try scored or 1 try saved and we could have won the tournament - we were that close. A number of people congratulated me on the standard of our play, saying our passing and teamwork was of the highest order. Thanks also to all the parents for their support, not just for today but throughout the year. I think you'll all agree that the improvement and development of the boys has been remarkable.

We have one more game left when we provide the half-time entertainment at the Liberty Stadium on Friday when the Ospreys take on Edinburgh, and then to round off the season, the Presentation Day on Sunday 4th May at 2:30pm with Jonathan Thomas, Ospreys and Wales, presenting the trophies.

Under 8's & 7's at Hendy (Sunday 20/04/08) - With both Hendy and Tycroes fielding young sides it was decided that Gowerton would merge the under 8's and under 7's, and with about 35 children turning up, Gowerton managed to put 3 sides together. A feast of rugby was then served up as both Hendy and Tycroes played against all the Gowerton teams - 6 games taking place in total. Couldn't tell you what the results were but tries were scored on a regular basis by all sides so a thoroughly enjoyable morning was had by all. Sorry that I have not mentioned the try scorers on the day but I do not want to leave anybody out.

Under 8's at South Gower (Sunday 13/04/08) - These two sides had already met twice this year with honours even after two tight games and this match was no different. Gowerton captain, Ryan Davies, won the toss and after a tight opening, Gowerton eventually broke down the strong South Gower defence when Matthew Hixon went over for a good team effort. South Gower then came back into the game to score two tries to finish the first half 2-1 up. South Gower then extended their lead but Gowerton hit back when Max Treharne ran a delightful angle to receive a scoring pass from Adam Fielding who had jinked his way through. South Gower then increased the pressure on Gowerton and Sam Jones showed his defence qualities by pulling off a couple of last ditch tags. At one point he appeared to be keeping South Gower at bay by himself, pulling off tag after tag. The pressure finally told when South Gower scored again. Gowerton raised their game, however, and got themselves back into the game when Jack Sopronuik, barged (literally) his way over. It was in vain, however, as South Gower maintained possession to run out 5-4 winners. Thank you to South Gower for their hospitality and the referee for a very fair and open game - I'm sure he felt better for the run out! Man-of-the-Match went to Sam Jones for a Herculean defensive effort.

Under 7’s at South Gower (Sunday 13/04/08) - Gowerton travelled to South Gower with 16 players. South Gower dominated the first half with several tries - experience showed in the first half with the home side racing away with a six try lead with no response from Gowerton. The second half witnessed a more evenly contested game with 4 tries from the home side and 2 from Gowerton; first Danny Thomas and then Tomos King. Charlie Williams, Rhys Davies and Aby John made their debuts, however South Gower deserved their victory. Some excellent tagging in the second half from all, Harri Ford, Rhys Jones, Tom King and Jamie Skipper ensured 2 turn overs. Man-of-the-Match for Gowerton was Jamie Skipper with some fine tagging and 2 lovely breaks from inside his own half.

Under 8's v Dunvant (Sunday 06/04/08) - Gowerton welcomed Dunvant for their first home fixture since January, on a bright April morning. Gowerton struggled to break down a well-drilled Dunvant defence in the first third, and on the occassions when they did break free, could not quite elude the last line of the defence. The first third, therefore, finished 2-0 to the visitors. Gowerton came back into the game in the second third when Rhys Lewis opened the home side's account. This was quickly followed by a long range effort from Max Treharne after Adam Gammon had made the initial burst through the Dunvant defence. Jack Sopronuik then put Gowerton into the lead with his first try. Dunvant responded with two tries at the end of the third to regain the lead. Dunvant then extended their lead with the first try of the third period but Jack Sopronuik got Gowerton back into the game when he squeezed over in the corner. Dunvant showed their skills with 2 more fine tries to eventually run out 7-4 winners. In addition to the players already mentioned, captain Nathan Davies performed well with some 'mazy' running but Man-of-the-Match went to Ryan Jones for some strong runs in only his 5th game.

Under 8's at Penlan (Sunday 30/03/08) - After previously visiting Penlan on a bitterly cold February morning, Gowerton under 8's made the trip again with some trepidation. All credit to Penlan for staging the game after Saturday's rain and what a cracker it turned out to be! Gowerton opened the scoring when Rhys Lewis showed a good turn of pace to score in the corner. Tries were then traded for the rest of the third with Gowerton ending this period 4-3 up after further tries were scored by Jack Sopronuik, Rhys Lewis with his second and brother, Dafydd Lewis dotting down from close range. The second third was dominated by strong Penlan defence with Gowerton failing to cross the line. Gowerton's defence wasn't quite as good but still restricted Penlan to just 2 tries - so 5-4 to Penlan going into the final third. Gowerton then struck back to regain the lead with tries from Sam Jones and Jack Sopronuik. Penlan equalised but a bullocking run from captain Luke Davies put Gowerton back in front. It was then Penlan's turn to score but, again, Gowerton regained the lead when Matthew Hixon provided good support to go over from close range. In a 'nip and tuck' game Penlan showed their spirit by tieing the game and in a tight finish a superb try line tag from Tom King turned the ball over for Gowerton to relieve the pressure. With the game tied at 8-8 the referee, who allowed both sides to play a free-flowing game, blew up for a well deserved draw. Credit to both sides for a very entertaining encounter. Man-of-the-Match was awarded to Tomos King for an outstanding defensive display.

Under 8's at Swansea Uplands (Sunday 23/03/08) - Swansea Uplands, playing 'downhill' for the first third, opened the scoring but Gowerton hit back when debutant Jacob Ireland scored. Gowerton extended their lead when Rhys Lewis showed his pace to race away and this was followed by Jack Sopronuik racing over. The first third was dominated by solid Gowerton defence to end 3-2 as Swansea Uplands hit back to score late on. Swansea Uplands showed a lot of spirit in the second third to level the match after Aled Simons had re-established Gowerton's lead. Good work by Ioan Brannigan put Matthew Hixon in for a score followed by a further tries by Jack Sopronuik and Max Treharne. At this point Gowerton led comfortably 7-4 but, playing downhill for the final third Swansea Uplands hit back with 3 tries. Good team play by Gowerton, however, won the day when Aled Simons scored his second to leave the final score 8-7 to Gowerton. Man-of-the-Match went to debutant Jacob Ireland. Playing his first game of rugby Jacob showed his strength by scoring a try and showed what a good player he could turn out to be by coming to terms with the game very quickly. Sam Jones, Tom King and Jac Simons also performed well with Tom pulling off a tremendous 'try-line tag' after Swansea Uplands' class player had weaved his way to the try line.

Under 8's at Dunvant (Sunday 02/03/08) - The Mothers Day Massacre - With all the boys making sure Mums had their breakfast in bed, we travelled to Dunvant to find the place packed and 3 games to play. With Mumbles fielding 2 sides, we played them first and a cracking tie ensued. Both sides threw the ball about with abandon helped by sympathetic refereeing, allowing both sides to make small mistakes but not punishing them. The result was a highly entertaining tussle enjoyed by both sets of players, coaches and supporters. Mumbles surged into an early lead but Gowerton hit back to end up drawing the game 5-5. Try scorers for Gowerton were Matthew Hixon, Ryan Davies, with 2, and Aled Simons. If anybody knows who scored our third try I would appreciate knowing so I can credit them.
Our second game was against Mumbles' second side and this proved a much tighter affair. Gowerton struggled to break down the strong Mumbles defence but perseverence eventually paid off when Rhys Lewis scored late in the second half - Gowerton going down 4-1 after a couple of break-away Mumbles tries.
Our third game proved to be one game too many. Not for the kids, who again performed admirably, but for the supporters. With the referee blowing up for any mistakes it proved to be a 'stop-start' affair. Gowertons' normal free-flowing style suffered and tempers cracked in the crowd. Dunvant's players performed very well, winning the game 4-2. Gowerton's scorers included Max Treharne. The identity of the other scorer was not recorded ( Dave Bivens was obviously still suffering from his usual Saturday night binge) so if anybody can update me on this I would be grateful. Having said that, I can't remember who scored either! - Must have been the stress of the 'pressure-cooker' enviroment - and age doesn't help either.
George Bivens picked up the Man-of-the-Match award after nearly crashing over and unlocking the Mumbles defence in the second game. Thanks to all the parents, especially the Mums for all the support on your special day.

Under 10's at Mumbles (Sunday 24/02/08) - Gowerton under 10's played at Mumbles and came away with a well deserved victory of 35 points to 21, after a hard game against a good Mumbles side. Gowerton's man-of-the-match Gareth Thomas scored 4 excellent tries and was unstoppable with his strong runs, linking well with fellow backs Sam Williams, Jordon Rewbridge and James Rouse who used the ball well. Gowerton went into an early lead of 14 nil with good play by their forwards, Daffydd Williams, Harrison Clewes and Sam Baron but Mumbles struck back with an excellent try of their own and the conversion. The Gowerton forwards started well after the break with Tom Northey scoring a cracking try and Christian Andrews, Mathew Preece and Ethan Harris battling well. Two more tries came from Gowerton's Gareth Thomas but Mumbles hit back with 2 good tries of their own. Gowerton's backs Dewi Kalsi, Cai Thomas, Elliot Scourfield and Ben Roberts used good hands behind the scrum, linking well with their colleauges. The game ended 35-21 with both teams having contributed to an excellent game.

Under 8's at Mumbles (Sunday 24/02/08) - With 15 boys turning up for Gowerton and a good turnout for Mumbles, it was agreed to play the game over 3 x 10 minute periods. Mumbles, playing downhill in the first 'third', started strongly to build up a two try lead but Jack Sopronuik reduced the arrears with a try after good work from Ryan Davies. It was interesting to observe the differences in styles of the two teams - Mumbles' more 'direct' style paid dividends when they scored their third to end the third 3-1 up. Playing downhill with a fresh set of players Gowerton's more expansive style got them back into the game when Rhys Lewis scorched over followed by a nicely worked try for Adam Fielding. Mumbles, however, continued to play well and scored a further 2 tries of their own. The final third saw Mumbles run out eventual 9-5 winners after Matthew Hixon and Jack Sopronuik scored. The timing was perfect as the heavens opened on the final whistle. Again credit to both sides for an entertaining encounter. Man-of-the-match went to Sam Jones for his good defensive work and in particular for his nice play when he linked well with Adam Fielding for his try. Ryan Jones, no less, performed well on his debut.

Under 7's at Mumbles (Sunday 24/02/08) - Gowerton Under 7's travelled to Mumbles with en excellent turn out of 17 players. Both sets of coaches agreed that we would play 3 periods due to the number of players . First period - Gowerton's best passage of play - saw Danny Thomas score the first try. This was then followed by tries from Iwan Jones and Tomos King. Gowerton's defensive work was superb and brave on times with tagging coming from Jack Griffiths, Jack Symons, Ben Petherbridge and Tomos King. Gowerton lead 3-2 after the first period. In the second period, Mumbles gained the upper hand as Gowerton rotated their squad, however Josh Jenkins raced away for a fine individual try. Some strong defensive work from Scott Davies and Josh Jenkins held Mumbles out, and an excellent break by Callum saw him tagged just short of the Mumbles line. Mumbles led 5-4 after the second period. In the last Period Gowerton scored a fabulous try by Ben Petherbridge, with the ball passing through 4 sets of hands without anyone being tagged - Barbarians-style rugby. Gowerton pushed Mumbles all the way with Josh Jenkins scoring in the corner but Mumbles held out for a final score of Mumbles 7 Gowerton 6 .
An excellent team performance from the lads, with a special mention for superb performances by Tomos King and Ben Petherbridge. Also, thanks to Keith Day for notes, and from the coaches, a big thanks for the support from the parents.

Under 8's at Morriston (Sunday 17/02/08) - It was result before performance on Sunday as the Under 8's scraped a win with a disappointing performance at Morriston. Morriston opened the scoring but Gowerton hit back with a try from Jack Sopronuik after good work from Ryan Davies and Max Treharne. Morriston then re-took the lead but Gowerton went into half-time equal after Matthew Hixon scored. Playing slightly downhill in the second half, Gowerton took control of the game when Adam Gammon scored from short range and Ioan Brannigan scored a lovely individual try. Morriston, however, never gave up and reduced the arrears with a try of their own. Matthew Hixon then showed his pace to re-establish the 2 try advantage. In a tight finish, Morriston scored to leave Gowerton hanging onto to a 5-4 win. Dominic Jenkins' defence stood out again but Nathan Davies won the Man-of-the-Match award after a good run to relieve the pressure on the Gowerton line towards the end of the game. A bit to work on for next week's visit to the seaside at Mumbles - let's hope the fine weather stays with us.

Under 8s at Waunarlwydd (Sunday 10/02/08) - Waunarlwydd/Tonmawr - On a beautiful February morning Gowerton headed to our local neighbours for a 'double-header' also including Tonmawr. First up was a young Tonmawr side and Gowerton started the game with a good defensive effort to turn the ball over upon which Jack Sopronuik opened the scoring. Tonmawr, however, showed their pluck coming back into the game. Gowerton's indiscipline in staying offside after the 'tag' started to cost them dear as a number of penalties were given away and Tonmawr took full advantage by keeping the pressure on Gowerton as tries were traded. A tight first-half ended 3-3 with further tries from Dafydd Lewis and Adam Fielding. The older Gowerton side showed their strength in the second-half eventually running out 8-5 winners with tries from Dafydd and Rhys Lewis, Luke Davies, a tremendous individual effort from Ioan Brannigan, and Jack Sopronuik. All credit to Tonmawr as the bulk of their players were actually under 7's.
Gowerton then played a combined Waunarlwydd/Tonmawr team with Rhys Lewis showing his pace to open the scoring with a length of the field effort. Matthew Hixon then scored a hat-trick and Adam Fielding got in on the act with two tries of his own. Gowerton played some good rugby with Jack Sopronuik setting up a try for Dafydd Lewis and Dominic Jenkins showing good skills in drawing a defender to put Rhys Lewis away for the final try. The final result was 8-2 to Gowerton. Man-of-the-Match was a tough decision with all the players contributing well. George Bivens had probably his best game for the team but Ioan Brannigan just edged him out with his try and tagging. Thank you to Waunarlwydd for allowing us to join in on a weekend where we had no fixture and, to the Tonmawr coaches who did a very good job of refereeing all the games.

Under 8's at Penlan (Sunday 03/02/08) - The short trip to Penlan proved too far as Gowerton slumped to a disappointing 8-3 defeat. After remaining unbeaten throughout December and January the wheels came off the Gowerton chariot (hee-hee) on a cold and windy morning when the bulk of the Gowerton players failed to cope with the conditions and lost concentration too easily. All credit to Penlan who coped much better and produced some marvellous rugby, full of evasive running and a very strong defence. Penlan established an early lead which was reduced when Max Treharne scored in the corner but Gowerton turned round at half-time 5-1 down. With the strong wind at their backs in the second half , Gowerton's performance improved and they got back into the game when Aled Simons went over. Penlan, however, maintained the pressure scoring a couple themselves. Gowerton's final try was scored by Jack Sopronuik. There was no Man-of-the-Match this week as no player stood out. A lesson therefore, for the Gowerton boys - Rugby is a tough game, sometimes played in tough conditions.

Under 13’s v Penclawdd (Sunday 27/01/08) - On the stroke of midday referee Mr Clayfield commenced the local derby. After their last two victories Gowerton were confident and up-beat with every intention of putting on a better display than the last time they met Penclawdd. Unfortunately, Penclawdd took an early grip of the game and with two well drilled and rehearsed plays, they successfully kicked to the left wing enabling their winger over the line on both occasions. As Penclawdd increased the pressure, Scott Richards and Lloyd Selby defended the right wing as Penclawd tried for their third. Together they brought down a fast-paced winger in what would have been a run away try. Full-back Boe Pickton defended and attacked with great spirit throughout the game and brought to a stop a determined attack from Penclawdd, only to see another kick to Gowerton’s vulnerable left wing for their third try. As the first-half settled, Gowerton’s forwards fought and held Penclawdd with a notable performance from both Chris Gray and Lewis Keen. Scrum-half Ryan Wiltshire was imaginative and used the ball well as Gowerton began to push forward and put the visitors on the back foot. Again the forwards worked well and battled for possession and ground. As the first-half came to a close, Lewis Keen broke into Penclawdd's 22 with a brave solo run through the midfield only to have the ball run into touch. The second-half began with the forwards locking together in midfield but Penclawdd opened to their wing for their fourth try. Winger Alistair Bater and Boe Pickton worked well in defence and together thwarted another determined attack on Gowerton’s line. Gowerton turned over the ball, working forward with strong play from Chris Ross and a well-placed up and over from Scott Richards onto Penclawdd’s line. A scrum on the five-yard line resulted in turnover ball and after a lengthy period of concerted pressure by the forwards on the visitors line, referee Mr Clayfield awarded a try to Gowerton. Penclawdd came back with a sustained attack on both wings and constantly pushed for the line. Gowerton were saved by try-stopping tackles from captain Will Cockle, Boe Pickton and Lewis Keen only to see Penclawdd finally go over for their fifth and final try. Double award for Man-of-the-Match went to Lewis Keen & Chris Ross.

Under 8's at Bynea (Sunday 27/01/08) - Blessed with a lovely winter's morning (for a change) Gowerton Under 8's made the short trip over the Loughor Bridge to meet Bynea. With Bynea kicking off, excellent Gowerton defence resulted in a 6-tag turnover which Gowerton made full use of when Matthew Hixon streaked away to open the scoring. The first half was dominated by strong Gowerton defence with Dominic Jenkins and Sam Jones to the fore. Bynea struggled to cope with the pace of Matthew Hixon as he scorched over for a first half hat-trick, ably supported with further tries from Ryan Davies and Jack Sopronuik. The first half ended 5-2 to Gowerton when Bynea scored on the half-time whistle. Bynea came back strongly in the second half, initially, reducing the arrears with some lovely rugby but Gowerton stuck to the task and eventually extended their lead with 2 more tries from Matthew Hixon and a first ever score from Dominic Jenkins. Ryan Davies rounded off the scoring when he scored in the corner whilst almost demolishing the corner flag. A thoroughly entertaining game ended 9-5 to Gowerton. There were a number of contenders for the Man-of-the-Match award. Matthew Hixon's captaincy and scoring exploits brought him to the fore whilst Luke Davies was prominent with his running and defence. The award, however, went to Dominic Jenkins for his try and excellent defensive performance.

Gowerton Under 7's at Pontarddulais (Sunday 27/01/08) - The Under 7's travelled to Pontarddulais for their first game of the year. Pontarddulais scored 2 early tries, however Gowerton hit back with a well earned try by Danny Thomas, this was followed by another try by the Bont. Scott Davies reduced the lead, racing away and touching down in the corner. Pontarddulais led at half time 3-2. There were some fine breaks especially from George Nicholls setting 1 of the tries up. In the second half, Pontarddulais ran in a further 4 tries, with Gowerton replying with a well earned try by Luke Day. Gowerton had their fair share of possession with strong runs from Danny Thomas, Josh Jenkins, Luke Day and Tomos King. This all led to pressure on the Pontarddulais try line however they could not break the experienced Pontarddulais defence. A big "well-done" to all the 12 boys who played, and congratulations to Luke, Danny and Scott who scored their first ever tries - but not their last!

Under 10's v Morriston (Sunday 20/01/08) - Gowerton were deserved winners 9 tries to 1 against Morriston in difficult conditions with Morriston batttling bravely in defence throughout the game. Gowerton produced an excellent performance with Jordon Rowbridge scoring 3 cracking tries and Gareth Thomas, Sam Williams, Sam James, Ethan Harris, Harrison Clewes and Daffydd Williams scoring the remaining tries. The rain came down during the game and the Gowerton backs and forwards still managed to put the ball through their hands and score some excellent tries. Forwards Tom Northey, Sam Baron and Daniel Tomkins produced a good rucking display with man of the match Christian Andrews also putting in a cracking tackle to turn the ball over at one point. Centre Gareth Thomas was yet again everywhere in defence and attack and scrum-halves Dewi Kalsi and Cai Thomas got the ball away well so that the backs, including James Rouse and Elliot Scourfield, could pass the ball along the line. Morriston tackled well throughout the game and deserved a try which they got when one of the forwards drove over close to the line. This game produced some excellent rugby in difficult conditions and was enjoyable to watch.

Under 8's v Morriston (Sunday 20/01/08) - Many thanks to the boys and parents who turned up on Sunday. Unfortunately, Morriston Under 8's failed to show so a 7 a-side game was held between the Gowerton boys - and very competitive it proved to be. Try scorers included Jack Sopronuik, Ioan Brannigan, Adam Fielding, Matthew Hixon and Dominic Jenkins. If I've missed anybody out I apologise. Not suprisingly the match ended in a draw so everybody went home happy. Special mention to Jack Sopronuik who used Nathan Davies' training top to play the match, proceeded to get the top wet and covered in mud and then put his own top on after the game to go back to the club in.

Under 10's v Penclawdd (Sunday 13/01/08) - An excellent, very well-contested game against Penclawdd which resulted in a draw at 1 try each. These two sides always produce good rugby when they play and, despite the conditions, this game was no exception with the result being a fair reflection of the game. Gowerton opened the try scoring with an excellent try from outside half Gareth Thomas who ran the length of the field beating numerous opponents to score. Penclawdd battled in the first half and were unlucky not to score with some good driving play in the forwards. The second half was again tight with Gowerton forwards Tom Northey, Daffydd Williams, Sam James and man-of-the-match Ethan Harris producing some good rugby. Penclawdd again pressed into the second half and earned a well deserved try when hooker Jack Porter crossed from close range.

Under 8's v Penclawdd (Sunday 13/01/08) - This was our first game for 4 weeks and only our second game in 7 weeks, so it appearred everybody was 'itching' for a game as we had a tremendous turnout of 17 boys. With good Penclawdd numbers as well, we tried to give all players as much 'game-time' as possible and it was eventually agreed to play the match over 4 periods! Penclawdd kicked off and good Gowerton defence resulted in a 6-tag turnover, which turned out to be a bit of a rarity in the game. Gowerton then attacked from deep with Rhys Lewis outstripping the Penclawdd defence to score from halfway. Further tries then came from Jack Sopronuik and Thomas King. Penclawdd, however, also ran the ball well and scored 2 tries themselves in the first quarter. The game then turned into a scoring frenzy with both sides scoring regularly. Jack Sopronuik ran in 7 tries in total with some tremendous evasive running and support play. It soon became difficult to keeps tabs on the score but Gowerton eventually ran out out winners 15-13. The other try scorers for Gowerton were Rhys Lewis with 3, Ryan Davies, Matthew Hixon, Sam Jones and Aled Simons. Man of the Match was given to Connor Mason.
An excellent game was played in a good spirit with both sides competing well. If these sides continue to develop their skills then the future looks bright for rugby in the area.

Under 11's at Skewen (Sunday 16/12/07) - Travelling on a very cold morning and despite struggling to get a full team together the boys that did turn up put on a superb display of rugby. Gowerton started very strongly and were very grateful to Joshua, Skewen's prop forward, who was happy to play with a Gowerton shirt on! Gowerton dominated the first half with some excellent driving from the forwards and superb passing and handling by the backs. Oliver Thomas, Captain of the day and scrum half, opened the scoring with the first try which was swiftly followed by well deserved tries from inside centre Matthew Williams, winger Adam Banfield, outside centre Nathan Williams and Skewen scoring an excellent try just before the half time whistle, making the half time score 4 - 1.
Gowerton again started the second half with great strength and determination, with outside half Jack Petherbridge scoring Gowerton's fifth try. Skewen fought back well with both sides playing some great rugby during the second half and Skewen scored 2 well deserved tries towards the end of the game, making the final score 5 - 3. Well done to both teams for an excellent game of rugby.

There will be no further training sessions or games this side of Christmas. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from the coaches, team and parents and from the under 11's sponsors Williams Woodcraft and Carstore, Gorseinon.

Under 10s v Dunvant (Sunday 16/12/07) - Gowerton fought for a hard earned victory against Dunvant running out eventual winners 38 - 14, with outstanding forward Dafydd Williams scoring a hat trick, dangerous centre Gareth Thomas scoring 2 cracking tries and flyer Jordon Rewbridge finishing off the Gowerton try count.  Dunvant battled hard over both halves and were unlucky not to score other tries but they were held back by the Gowerton defence with Tom Northey, Sam James, Sam Baron, Ben Roberts and Harrison Clewes battling well up front. Gowerton's back's. Cai Thomas, Dewi Kalsi, Sam Williams, Gareth Thomas, Elliot Scourfield and Jordon Rewbridge had their work cut out against a dangerous Dunvant back line but some good play and linking with the forwards led to well deserved tries. Other players who battled well for Gowerton on the day were man of the match Mathew Preece and hooker Christian Andrews who were never far from the action.
These sides normally have closer games and this was a hard fought encounter which led to Gowerton running out winners thanks to some excellent tries and good support play by all players.

Under 8s at Skewen (Sunday 16/12/07) - After kicking our heels for the last two weeks Gowerton travelled to Skewen with only 7 players. Skewen, however, appearred to be suffering the same problem as I did not recognise any of the players that fought out a draw a fortnight ago. Gowerton started well when Sam Jones shimmied through the Skewen defence and used his pace to reach the line. Gowerton then extended their lead when Max Treharne took advantage of the inexperienced Skewen side to race away and score. Further tries were then added by Thomas King , debuting from the Under 7's, and captain Adam Gammon who showed a rare turn of pace to score his first try ever. Iwan Jones then got in on the act going over from halfway and Jack Sopronuik showed his pace by scoring two tries. At half-time Gowerton held a healthy 7-1 advantage.
A young Skewen side showed their pluck in the second half to play some lovely rugby and score 4 tries of their own but Gowerton maintained their advantage with two tries from Aled Simons and further scores from Max Treharne and Jack Sopronuik. Aled Simons' second score was a cracker after Adam Gammon had burst through the Skewen defence and drew the last defender before slipping the ball to Man of the Match, Aled, on a lovely supporting run. Well done to the 7 players, who all scored tries, with special thanks to Thomas King and Iwan Jones for helping out from the Under 7's.

No games now until January as we enjoy our Christmas break, but don't forget the Parents' Christmas Disco on the 22nd and the Kids' Christmas party on the 23rd. I'll be in touch regarding a training session between Christmas and the New Year to blow the cobwebs away!!

MERRY CHRISTMAS !!!!!

Under 11s v Skewen (Sunday 25/11/07) - Skewen travelled to Gowerton with a coach full of players!! In an evenly matched first-half Gowerton opened the scoring with inside-centre Kieran Fisher scoring the first of his 4 tries in an excellent performance by him. Skewen equalised with a well worked try with Gowerton's scrum-half Oliver Thomas responding with a great try, putting Gowerton ahead for the second time. The second-half saw Skewen bring on fresh legs in a half where centre Kieran Fisher scored the remaining 3 of his 4 tries. Hooker Liam Morgan took 4 against the head in the scrum and Nathan Williams played very well at outside-half, out of his usual position on the wing. Man-of-the-match was awarded to second row/centre Matthew Williams for an outstanding driving and linking game. Skewen have to be congratulated for a hard fought and fair game, with thanks once again to our match referee, Denzil Clayfield.

Under 8s v Skewen (Sunday 25/11/07) - An improvement in the weather brought another good turn out to host a visiting Skewen. Max Treharne captained the side and Gowerton started well when Adam Fielding scored early on. Gowerton then extended the lead when Luke Davies scored his first ever try. Skewen fought back, however, with a try of their own but Gowerton maintained their lead at the end of the first 'third' when Adam Fielding scored again. Skewen came back strongly in the second 'third' to take the lead but Gowerton stayed in the game when Adam Fielding intercepted on his own line and ran the length of the field to score. Sam Jones then crossed to keep the Gowerton scoreboard ticking over. Going into the final 'third' Gowerton needed to score and Adam Fielding duly obliged beating a number of defenders on his way to the line. Going into the final minute Gowerton trailed by 1 try but from an attacking position Aled Simons timed his supporting run to perfection to take a pass at full pace and 'step' the last defender to score in the corner. 7-7 was a fair result as both sides played the match in an excellent spirit. Man of the Match was given to Adam Gammon for a strong defenisve performance, although he was run close by Dominic Jenkins who also defended well.

Under 10's v Fall Bay (Sunday 18/11/07) - Gowerton’s winning run came to an end when they played a very well drilled Falls Bay side who won 26 – 7 at Gowerton. Within 5 minutes of the start of the game Fall Bay scored twice through concerted pressure and good handling by the backs. Good driving by the Gowerton forwards particularly Sam James, Daffydd Williams, Tom Northey and Harrison Clewes kept Gowerton in the game and pressure on the Fall Bay line resulted in a score for Sam James to make it 14 – 7. The pressure though continued to come from Falls Bay and Gowerton were in their own half for long periods despite good work by Gareth Thomas, Jordon Rewbridge and Sam Williams to get them upfield. Fall Bay scored 2 more tries one being an interception to take the score to 26 – 7 and despite the efforts of forwards Ethan Harris, Sam Baron, Christian Andrews and Suraj Singh, Gowerton couldn’t get over the line again. Man-of-the- Match Dewi Kalsi and Cai Thomas fought bravely at the base of the scrum but to no avail, with the wings James Rudderham and James Rouse not seeing much of the ball, and the game ended at 26 – 7 with Fall Bay running out deserved winners

Under 8's v Fall Bay (Sunday 18/11/07) - Another excellent turn out with 15 boys turning up on a horrible morning. Falls Bay won the toss and stormed into an early 2-0 lead. This was reduced, however, when Captain Jack Sopronuik ran well to score. Fall Bay were then unlucky not to score when they touched down short of the Gowerton line and quick thinking from Adam Fielding paid dividends when he picked the ball up and held off the Fall Bay defenders to go the entire length of the pitch to make it 2-2. Further tries came in this half when Adam Fielding scored his second and Jack Sopronuik completed his hat-trick to leave the game poised at 5-5 at half-time.
Fall Bay again started strongly in the second half but Gowerton rallied with tries from Jack Sopronuik and Rhys Lewis who stormed over 3 times down the right wing. At this point Gowerton led 9-8 but back came Fall Bay with a late try to tie the scores. Gowerton, however, now had the ball from the kick off and should have secured at least a draw but sloppy passing saw Fall Bay pick up and score from half-way to win 10-9. Another good performance from the Gowerton boys as they just missed out yet again. WE WILL WIN AGAIN SOON. The Man of the Match was given to Adam Fielding for his 2 try performance and 'length of the field' effort. Well done to everybody.

Under 11's v Mumbles (Sunday 11/11/07) - Mumbles travelled to Gowerton and both teams started strongly with Mumbles opening the scoring and Gowerton quickly responding with a try from hooker Liam Morgan. With Mumbles leading the game a number of Gowerton's players had to leave the pitch due to injuries but with further tries from Kieran Fisher and Jack Petherbridge, Gowerton continued to battle on and the game finished 15-35. Gowerton's Man Of The Match was awarded to try scorer Kieran Fisher for an excellent performance. Referee Denzil Clayfield was appreciated by both players and coaches alike for a fair and disciplined match.

Under 10's v Mumbles (Sunday 11/11/07) - Gowerton’s winning run is now 6 matches with 7 wins out of 8 this season. Mumbles were defeated 25 – 10 after 3 late tries by Gowerton in a very keenly contested match that was enjoyed by all supporters. The first try came through prolific scoring centre Gareth Thomas who sprinted half the length of the field and beat 2 players to score a cracking try. The game went from end to end and Gowerton scored their second when Tom Northey pressured the kicker to get over the line from close range. Mumbles then came back into the game with 2 good tries and the game was evenly balanced until late on when Gowerton got their tries. The first came when speedy winger James Rudderham finished off a move and the second through outside half Sam Williams who started off and finished the move with a close range try. Mumbles continued to battle hard but Gowerton gained their final try when prop Dafydd Williams beat 2 players and crashed over the line.

Under 8's v Mumbles (Sunday 11/11/07) - An excellent turnout saw 16 boys turn up for the game and it was decided with Mumbles to play two fifteen minute halves of 8-a-side. Aled Simons captained the side with Gowerton putting in a solid first half performance. Jack Sopronuik scored 3 solo tries with his strong running and Ryan Davies and Luke Davies supported well with some gallant defending. Mumbles ran the ball well, however, and some sloppy defending allowed Mumbles to build up a lead which Gowerton managed to reduce to 7-4 with a try from Ioan Brannigan late on.There were also encouraging performances from Nathan Davies, Max Treharne and, especially, George Bivens, who nearly cost his father a new pair of boots when he was just stopped short of crashing over for his first try.
The second half saw a whole new team entering the fray and Gowerton immediatley reduced the arrears with Rhys Lewis outstripping the Mumbles defence for an early score. Gowerton then defended well culminating in Adam Fielding going the length of the field to score his first try. Mumbles then stormed back into game with a try from some excellent rugby. Further Gowerton tries were scored by Dafydd Lewis and Adam Fielding. Sam Jones and Matthew Hixon looked dangerous with their 'mazy' running but they couldn't quite escape the clutches of the Mumbles defenders. Gowerton's last try came from some great work from 'Big' Adam Gammon who drew 2 or 3 defenders to him before slipping the ball to Rhys Lewis to score in the corner. At this point Gowerton were right in the game at 10-9 down but Mumbles secured victory with two late scores to seal the match. Connor Mason and Dominic Jenkins both contributed to a good performance from Gowerton.
Overall an excellent game of rugby was enjoyed by both sets of supporters with the game played in a good spirit. This was probably as good a performance that the boys have put in so far, so the future looks bright for both Mumbles and Gowerton. The Man of the Match award was given to Rhys Lewis for his two tries and good defending.
Stop press - Futher good news received from Fred this morning - It looks likely that we have secured a sponsor to provide a new set of jerseys for the boys. More news to follow when available.

Under 7's v Mumbles (Sunday 11/11/07) -  Gowerton Under 7s playing their first match ever. - Mumbles scored a few early tries, however Gowerton hit back with a lovely run from Ben Petherbridge, Mumbles tagged (tackled) well Iwan Jones, Tomos King and Danny Thomas. At half time Mumbles had the upperhand. The second-half witnessed Gowerton's best play with 3 tries being scored - 2 from Josh Jenkins and 1 from Tomos King, giving Gowerton heart, but Mumbles finally won 10-4 . All players should be extremely proud of their performance, bearing in mind some of the players have only started playing rugby less than 6 weeks. - Well done lads!

Under 10's v Pontardawe (Sunday 04/11/07) - Gowerton continued their winning run which is now 5 matches with a 40-5 win over Pontardawe. Gowerton started the scoring through high scoring centre Gareth Thomas who scored an individual try, followed very closely by his second. Pontardawe who were striving to get back into the game then got over the try line after some good driving play. Gowerton’s forwards were very impressive and turned over possession a number of times with their strong driving play through Harrison Clewes and Ethan Harris. This resulted in further tries through prop Dafydd Williams and also hard tackling forward Sam James. Pontardawe continued to battle and forced Gowerton to tackle well and in the second half the Gowerton backs started to string their passes together with man of the match Sam Williams working well with centres Gareth Thomas and flyer Jordon Rewbridge and elusive wingers James Rouse and James Rudderham. Further scores came through strong running prop Tom Northey and 2 for speedster Jordon Rewbridge who finished off an excellent move. Pontardawe continued to battle into the second half but Gowerton continued to work as a team with Cai Thomas and Dewi Kalsi both being involved in handling moves. The eighth try was eventually secured through Dafydd Williams who rounded off an impressive performance.

Under 11's at Llangennech (Sunday 28/10/07) - Gowerton Under 11's travelled away and started the game very strongly with 2 tries in the first 15 minutes, scored by hooker Liam Morgan and centre Kieran Fisher - both tries converted by outside-half Jack Petherbridge. But Llangennech soon hit back with 2 tries straight away, the score at half time being 14-14. In a hard fought second half, dominated by Gowerton who were unable to capitalise on their pressure, the game was won by Llangennech who scored the only try in the second half. The final score 21-14.

Under 10's at Llangennech (Sunday 28/10/07) - Gowerton continued their winning run, which is now 4 matches, with a 46-7 win over Llangennech. Man of the match Jordon Rewbridge started the scoring with the first play of the game with an interception and he soon scored his second which was another excellent long range effort. Despite Llangennech’s efforts to get into the game, Gowerton pressed them during the first half through strong work by their forwards, especially Dafydd Williams and Harrison Clewes, which led to further tries by Tom Northey and the team’s top try scorer Gareth Thomas. Gowerton kicked off in the second half and maintained the pressure on Llangennech, who battled bravely to get back into the game, but another determined forward drive allowed Gowerton scrum-half Dewi Kalsi to dive over for a try. During the second half, strong-running prop Tom Northey got his second try and there were 2 good individual tries for outside-half Sam Williams and wing James Rudderham. Despite the score-line, which is usually closer between these teams, Llangennech were determined to get off the mark and they achieved this with a strong run from their second-row who scored a well deserved try.

Under 8's at Llangennech (Sunday 28/10/07) - Gowerton captain, Connor Mason, won the toss and decided that 'we would have a go first'. Unfortunately, our 'first go' was snuffed out and Llangennech broke away to score. Gowerton rallied, however, with Matthew Hixon and Rhys Lewis scoring good tries. Both teams ran and defended well and Llangennech got back into the game with a try just before half-time to level the scores at 2-2. The second half continued in much the same vein with 'cut and thrust' from both sides (is this starting to sound familiar ?). Matthew Hixon used his speed to cross again and Dafydd Lewis scored an outstanding individual try sending, almost, the entire Llangennech side the wrong way with a series of dazzling sidesteps. Llangennech, however, had scored a couple of tries of their own and the match ended with Llangennech scoring with the last play of the game to win the match 5-4. Another encouraging performance but we still need to concentrate a little harder when we've not got the ball. Well done to Dafydd Lewis for his man of the match award and also to Luke Davies for some fine defence.

Under 15's v Porthcawl (Sunday 14/10/07) - Gowerton Under 15's put up a strong performance at home over Porthcawl in the Ospreys Cup. Latham Davies once again led the try scoring stakes with four tries, Louie Taylor, Rhys Stuckey and Callum McKenzie chipped in with a further try each with Scott Gibson converting 4, to record an excellent 43 - 12 victory.

Under 11's v South Gower (Sunday 14/10/07) - Both teams fought hard in an exciting first half with Gowerton going into the break 5 - 0 down. But in a tremendous second half, Gowerton fought back with the forwards driving hard and the first try being scored by second-row Matthew Williams. This was followed by some great passing by the backs resulting in centre Nathan Williams, going on an excellent run to score the second try for Gowerton. Gowerton concluded their great performance with a third try from hooker Liam Morgan, with a consolation try being scored by South Gower in the final minutes of the game to leave a final score of 15-10 to Gowerton. Gowerton's man of the match was awarded to Alex Freeman for some great defensive work. The boys are looking forward to next week's away clash with Dunvant.

Under 8's v South Gower (Sunday 14/10/07) - Due to the squad numbers of South Gower it was agreed that the match would be played over 3 x 10 minute 'thirds'. Gowerton, missing some key players, scored first against a young South Gower side with Rhys Lewis racing over but South Gower hit back gamely with a try of their own. Gowerton then took control of this 'third' with tries from debutant Iwan Brannigan, Max Treharne and Jack Soprunuik. For the second 'third' South Gower brought on their more experieced players and a far tighter game was fought. South Gower came back into the game with a try but Gowerton eventually extended their lead with further tries from Max Treharne and Aled Simons. South Gower took control in the final 'third' with 3 tries but Gowerton just managed to hang on for a 6-5 win.
It was especially nice to see lots of progress form the likes of George Bivens and Dominic Jenkins along with other solid performances form Luke Davies and Ryan Davies. Max Treharne was awarded the Man of the Match award for, not just, his two tries but his consistent performances over the last few weeks. A rest weekend next Sunday as I recover from the inevitable World Cup final hangover - Come on South Africa !!!!!

Under 8's at Penclawdd (Sunday 07/10/07) - Gowerton Under 8's made the short journey down the North Gower road to visit local neighbours Penclawdd. In a high scoring game Penclawdd took an early lead but Gowerton hit back with tries from Jack Soprunuik and Max Treharne. Defending from both sides left a lot to be desired as both sides seemed to score whenever they had the ball. Gowerton went into the break 4-3 down but rallied in the second half when Jack Soprunuik completed his hat-trick. Further tries were scored by Dafydd and Rhys Lewis but Gowerton couldn't quite hang on and went down 8-7 (we think - not 100% sure, as Fred and the referee thought Gowerton had won, but Vince and me thought Penclawdd had won). Jack Soprunuik was given Man of the Match for his 4 tries. Training as normal on Friday at 6 o'clock in preparation for the vist of South Gower - I think we'll be working on defence !!!

Under 15's v Loughor (Sunday 30/09/07) - Gowerton defeated Loughor 47 - 10 with an impressive performance - scorers and details to follow.

Under 11's v Gorseinon (Sunday 30/09/07) - Playing against Gorseinon, in a hard fought 1st half Gowerton did well and went into the break 14 - 7 up, both tries scored by scrum-half Oliver Thomas and converted by Jack Petherbridge. Unfortunately for Gowerton several of the decisions made by the Gorseinon referee went against us, which included 3 disallowed tries for Gowerton, which drastically affected the result of the game. Gorseinon put the pressure on in the 2nd half and the final score was 26 - 14. Gowerton's man of the match was awarded to Oliver Thomas for an excellent performance, including the only try scorer of the day for Gowerton. A week off next week for the under 11's but training hard for our next clash with South Gower in a fortnight.

Under 15's at Vardre (Sunday 23/09/07) - The U15's visited Vardre and struggled early on in the very wet conditions, As the game wore on, Gowerton started to dominate proceedings and ran out convincing 48 - 5 winners. (scorers not known at present). Well done boys!!

Under 11's at Loughor (Sunday 23/09/07) - Gowerton U'11's played Loughor away, conditions were very poor, but the boys were outstanding. Nathan Williams scored the first try for Gowerton, successfully converted by Jack Petherbridge. The second try came from Matthew Williams, again converted by Jack and the third try was scored by Jack himself! At half-time it was 14-14 and it didn't take long into the second half for Gowerton to take the lead. But unfortunately Loughor overtook us with 3 more tries in the second half, the final score being 35 - 19. Gowertons 'Man of the Match' today was awarded to the second try scorer Matthew Williams, for a superb all round performance. An excellent game of rugby from both teams, with Gowerton very proud of their performance and heads up high for Gorseinon away next week!!!

Under 8's at South Gower (Sunday 23/09/07) - In windy and wet conditions the under 8's travelled to South Gower with a somewhat depleted squad but performed admirably in the circumstances. South Gower took an early lead but Gowerton hit back with a try by Max Treharne. Both teams ran the ball with tries alternating between the sides. Matthew Hixon crossed twice for Gowerton with two superb individual efforts but South Gower eventually ran out 4-3 winners. Jack Sopronuik stood out again for his outstanding running with the ball with Gowerton Man of the Match, Luke Davies, defending brilliantly. No game next week as we give the boys some rest in the build up to the local derby with Penclawdd on 7th October.
