U14's v Fall Bay - CLOSE ENCOUNTER!

On another glorious day for rugby we welcomed Fall Bay to the Athletic ground and following the game earlier in the season, we knew this was going to be a tough game.  Both teams started well and looked dangerous in possession but if was the opposition who got on the scoreboard first with a well worked try after 5 minutes, this was also converted to make it 0-7.  This seemed to spur us on and following an excellent steal in the line out by Sam Terry, Brandon Jones took the ball and charged through the defensive line to score under the posts which Louis Davies converted to make it 7-7 after 10 minutes.  Further Gowerton pressure saw us push for another try and after numerous phases, Brandon Jones finally managed to break a few tackles down the blind side and dive in by the corner flag, the conversion was missed, 12-7 after 15 minutes.  The remainder of the first half was a tight affair with both teams threatening but defenses holding strong, with Jake Mann putting in an impressive display in both attack and defensive in the first half.  On the stroke of half time, Jeremy 'The Milkman' Stock our referee penalised Cameron Jones for a high tackle right in front of the posts which Fall Bay kicked to end the half and scores 12-10 to us.

The second half started asmost of the first half did with both teams having plenty of possession but neither team able to find that breakthrough.  It took until the 13th minute of the half before Brandon Jones made a fantastic break from a lineout on halfway and the move was finished by Troy Davies, the conversion from far out was missed to make it 17-10.  Fall Bay came back straight away and pushed for the response and it came on 18 minutes when they managed to score in the corner but the conversion was missed to make it 17-15.  Fall Bay could sense the tide was turning and threw caution to the wind which paid dividends with another try 2 minutes later which they converted to make it 17-22.  A tough last 10 minutes looked on the cards but in fairness we dug deep and a fantastic 50yd break by Alex Graham-Wollard so him crash over for a try which went unconverted but brought the scores level at 22-22 after 23 minutes.  The game was now totally in the balance and Gowerton were pressing hard for the win.  A move saw Troy Davies rampage down the touchline and appear to go all the way to the try line however most of the Fall Bay players had stopped thinking he was in touch.  Troy stood in the goal area with ball in hand thinking play had been called back but the referee called play on and Troy just touched the ball down to secure the try.  Louis Davies kicked a fine conversion to seal the victory 29-22.  A tough game against a decent team but still plenty to improve on.
